About our free service
A free service for people in Scotland facing a wage arrestment or sheriff officer action. We talk to the council and the sheriff officers, so you do not have to.
What we do
Wage Arrestment Expert helps people in Scotland who are behind on council tax and are dealing with sheriff officers, a charge for payment, or an earnings arrestment that is already taking money from their pay.
Our help is free and there is no obligation. We focus on Scottish council tax arrears, because that is where most wage arrestments start, and on the Scots law that governs how they are collected.
- We contact the council and the sheriff officers on your behalf, with your written permission.
- We put an affordable, realistic repayment offer to them, called a special payment arrangement.
- We check the deductions from your pay match the legal tables.
- Where you have other debts too, we explain whether a formal solution such as the Debt Arrangement Scheme or a trust deed would suit you better, and can introduce you to a provider.
Whether the council accepts an arrangement is its decision. We know what councils and sheriff officers are likely to agree to, and we build the offer around that, but no one can promise an outcome.
How it works
- You apply. Answer a few questions about the letters you have had and your situation. It takes about two minutes.
- We call you back. At a time that suits you, Monday to Thursday. Have your letters and, if your wages are being arrested, a recent payslip to hand.
- You give us permission. A short written authority lets us speak to the council and the sheriff officers for you.
- We make the offer. We contact them, put forward an arrangement you can afford, and keep you updated.
The sheriff officer firms we deal with
Most council tax in Scotland is collected by a small number of firms. We regularly deal with Scott & Co, Walker Love, Stirling Park and Alex M Adamson, and with every one of Scotland’s 32 councils.
